From SME roots to deep-tech leadership

Derrick Yap is one of the most forward-looking entrepreneurs in Singapore, pioneering robotics and automation across Asia. As CEO of PBA Group, Yap transformed a small motion control distribution business — originally founded by his father — into a leading robotics and AI company in Southeast Asia.

His journey began with a mechanical engineering degree from Nanyang Technological University (NTU). After working in precision engineering, Yap returned to the family business in 2008. He didn’t just aim to grow it — he set out to transform it. His goal was to build a company that could design and produce its own autonomous systems.

Instead of relying on low-cost labor or importing ready-made solutions, Yap chose innovation. He led PBA’s shift toward developing in-house automation systems, software, and purpose-built robots. These solutions serve sectors such as healthcare, logistics, and manufacturing.

Driving robotics innovation in Southeast Asia

Over the last decade, Yap has redefined PBA Group’s position in the industry. The company now operates across more than 10 Asian markets and employs over 500 people. It builds full-stack robotics systems — including autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), collaborative robots (cobots), and custom software platforms.

One standout product is RACE, an AMR platform used in hospitals and warehouses. Another key initiative, AgileX, delivers mobile robotic systems designed for the region’s urban density and transport challenges.

Moreover, Yap strongly supports workforce upskilling. He launched Techlarity Academy to help Singaporeans learn robotics and automation skills. This move supports national goals outlined by Enterprise Singapore and the Smart Nation program to strengthen local industries.

Although privately held, PBA earned a spot on Forbes Asia’s 200 Best Under a Billion in 2019. The recognition confirmed its commercial strength and influence across the region.

Reinventing industry with purpose

Yap brings more than technical expertise to his role — he brings vision. He often talks about “democratizing robotics”, aiming to make automation affordable for smaller firms, not just global giants. In Southeast Asia, where many SMEs struggle with high automation costs, this approach proves timely and practical.

He also believes in tech with purpose. During the COVID-19 pandemic, PBA deployed robots in hospitals to reduce human contact and ensure continuity of care.

Yap advocates for early education reform as well. He encourages schools to introduce design thinking and engineering basics, helping young students become tomorrow’s innovators.

Conclusion

Derrick Yap’s journey reflects the evolution of Singapore’s startup landscape. By turning a family-run SME into a deep-tech innovator, he shows how bold leadership and clear purpose can transform traditional businesses.

As PBA Group continues expanding into new tech areas and building local expertise, Yap’s story offers a powerful example of how innovation can grow from within.
