Visa policy revamp positions Vietnam as Asia’s next travel powerhouse

Vietnam has recorded a staggering 300% year-on-year rise in international tourist arrivals, thanks to sweeping visa policy reforms. The shift marks a critical milestone in the country’s strategic efforts to diversify tourism, boost regional economies, and compete with Asia’s top travel destinations.

Strategic reforms reshape Vietnam’s travel appeal

In August 2023, Vietnam implemented a landmark set of visa liberalization policies aimed at revitalizing its tourism sector post-COVID. These include the extension of e-visas to 90 days for citizens from over 80 countries and expanded multiple-entry privileges. Additionally, travelers from major markets such as South Korea, Japan, and several EU countries benefit from visa exemptions.

The results have been immediate. According to Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, over 13 million international travelers entered the country during the first five months of 2025—nearly triple the number from the same period in 2024.

Key markets lead the travel influx

South Korea remains the top source of inbound travelers, followed closely by China, the United States, India, and key European nations. This surge has been further supported by improved air connectivity across Asia, with more direct flights from cities like Seoul, Bangkok, and New Delhi.

Tourist hotspots such as Da Nang, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Ha Long Bay are experiencing near-full hotel occupancy. In response, major hospitality groups—including Accor and Fusion—are accelerating their regional expansion plans to meet demand.

Editorial insight: Policy as a powerful growth lever

Vietnam’s transformation offers a compelling case study in how agile policy can unlock rapid economic benefits. At a time when countries across Asia are vying for high-value travelers, Vietnam’s extended e-visa and multiple-entry permissions give it a crucial competitive edge.

More importantly, the reforms are designed to increase not just visitor numbers, but also length of stay and per-capita spending. The 90-day visa encourages multi-region exploration, spreading economic activity beyond urban centers to secondary destinations such as Sapa and Ninh Binh.

Future outlook: Sustainable growth meets strategic tourism

Vietnam’s rebound signals more than a tourism recovery—it heralds a new phase of strategic positioning. With sustainability becoming a focal point, the government is implementing guidelines to protect fragile ecosystems in sites like Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng and the Mekong Delta. Tourist infrastructure is also being enhanced with smart city elements and environmental safeguards.

The national goal is to attract 18 to 20 million international tourists annually by 2030, while maintaining a balance between development and preservation. Upcoming initiatives include regional travel partnerships and digital platforms to streamline travel planning and service access.

Conclusion: Vietnam's tourism transformation sets regional benchmark

Vietnam’s 300% spike in tourist arrivals is a direct outcome of smart, traveler-first policy design. By turning immigration reform into an engine of economic revival, Vietnam is not only rebuilding its tourism sector—it’s setting a precedent for Asia’s next era of travel strategy.
